An abundance of death

Joanne McNeil on The Daily Death:

In the future, a famous person will die every fifteen minutes. Already it's happening. The ascent of the microcelebrities, the 24 hour news cycle, citizen journalism, and our darkest fantasies all collide on Twitter now. The website's rhetorical question "What are you doing?" sometimes feels more like "Who died today?"

I wrote about something similar a few years ago in a post called Death in the celebrity age:

Chances are in 15-20 years, someone famous whose work you enjoyed or whom you admired or who had a huge influence on who you are as a person will die each day...and probably even more than one a day. And that's just you...many other famous people will have died that day who mean something to other people. Will we all just be in a constant state of mourning? Will the NY Times national obituary section swell to 30 pages a day? As members of the human species, we're used to dealing with the death of people we "know" in amounts in the low hundreds over the course of a lifetime. With higher life expectancies and the increased number of people known to each of us (particularly in the hypernetworked part of the world), how are we going to handle it when several thousand people we know die over the course of our lifetime?

The population pyramid for who the average American knows (or knows of enough to care) probably looks something like this:

Celebrity Population Pyramid

That's a lot of future death.

Whale Shark Spotted Off Panama City Beach Coast

(download)

Panama City- A Panama City scuba diver caught a rare sight on tape, and it was his first time diving with a camera. People who have been scuba diving for decades haven't seen what James Russell saw Friday. Russell was diving on stage two when he captured this footage of a 20 foot whale shark.

The whale shark wasn't bothered by Russell at all. It swam right past the stunned diver. "It was like a submarine. It was huge! It was blue and spotted. It was really calm. It checked us out. It was exhilarating," said Russell.

Where Russell was diving, Stage 2, is an old Navy platform that was sunk to create an artificial reef. It's about a mile and a half from shore. Whale sharks are typically found in warmer water, like the Caribbean. But they'll occasionally stray into the northern gulf during the mid-to-late summer when the water is the warmest.

USAA Bank Will Let Customers Deposit Checks by iPhone

J. Michael Short for USAA

Customers of USAA can photograph both sides of the check, send the images through an app and then void the check.

The Internet has taken a lot of the paperwork out of banking, but there is no avoiding paper when someone gives you a check. Now one bank wants to let customers deposit checks immediately — through their phones.

This day in history...

On the evening of 3 August 1492, Columbus departed from Palos de la Frontera with three ships; one larger carrack, Santa María, nicknamed Gallega (the Galician), and two smaller caravels, Pinta (the Painted) and Santa Clara, nicknamed Niña after her owner Juan Niño of Moguer.

Amazing Light Paintings

Light paintings, also known as light drawing or light graffiti, is a photography technique in which exposures are usually made at night or in a darkened room. The images we are featuring here are from Jan Wöllert and Jörg Miedza, the guys behind LAPP-PRO. The light art performance photography (briefly LAPP) is a one-shot, long time bulb exposure photography, performed additionally with movement of light. LAPP originates on a real-time basis directly in front of the camera, created between opening and closing the shutter.

The work from Jan Wöllert and Jörg Miedza was suggested by one of our readers, longo, who mentioned these guys and asked us for a post about them. As they have some really amazing photos, we made this selection to show you here. Long exposure photography involving light effects are really awesome. We also featured a post about it a while ago, Awesome Light Graffiti Pictures, and here we are again showing nice 'light paintings' to inspire you! In writing this post, I remembered the statement, "In photography, it's all about light." I would say that it all depends on the effect that you want to produce - the correct light, the right amount of light, extra light, 'moving' light and maybe no light! Personally, I really liked LAPP-PRO's photos. They are pure art! And thanks to longo for the great suggestion! Enjoy. :)
